Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Nearly 18% of children aged 6-11 years and 21% of adolescents aged 12-19 years were obese in 2012, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared with 7% and 5%, respectively, in 1980. Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. They are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems, such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem. Obese youth also are likely to be obese as adults and therefore at greater risk for adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
Healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming obese and developing related diseases. Schools play a critical role in improving the dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents. They can create healthy environments by implementing policies and practices that support healthy eating and regular physical activity and by providing opportunities for students to learn about and practice these behaviors. A healthy school environment can also support academic achievement, since children with high-quality diets and increased physical activity levels perform better in school.

Making physical activity a part of daily living is important for health. Being physically active is about moving more throughout the day. This can include walking, taking the stairs, riding a bike, dancing, playing outside, and so much more! The Health Promotion Department works towards making the healthy choice the easier choice in the places where we live, work, learn and play. We work with professionals, organizations, cities, communities, municipalities, and government on strategies to facilitate active living in our daily lives through community design, policy, education and training.

As young children grow and develop they need to move, sleep and sit the right amounts each day to be healthy, and these guidelines can help with just that.
